The theme for this week’s Photohunt is “articificial”. I’m showing a very ugly photo, but one I think is very appropriate. It’s getting close to fall in Alaska. The days are getting shorter, and soon it’s going to be time to get out the Light Box to help in preventing Seasonal Affective Disorder. That’s unfortunately one of the disadvantages of living in an are where in the winter time you get limited sunlight. Here’s what Mayo Clinic has to say: “A light therapy box is a device used mainly to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression. Light therapy mimics outdoor light. This causes a biochemical change in your brain that lifts your mood and reduces symptoms of seasonal affective disorder. Light therapy boxes are also known as light boxes, bright light therapy boxes and phototherapy boxes.”

  1. Cindy, Thanks for sharing. I have never seen one of these boxes before although I have heard of this disorder. Your husband probably doesn’t need it though. I’m thinking you provide all the sunshine he needs!

  2. oh my… I can imagined living in gloomy and little sun light during those winter months. I wonder how humans survived before the inventions of light therapy boxes and discovery of the SAD? 🙁
My son sleeps when sun sets and if it’s Spring/Summer, he went to bed late just like the sun but when he’s back in mommy’s hometown, he’s off to bed around 8 pm after the sun sets around 7 pm.

  3. I wish I had one of these of the half winter I spent in Spokane last year, the lack of sunshine was really getting me.
I’ve never seen these boxes before, although I’ve heard of the disorder. Great take on the theme!

  4. Interesting take on the theme! If I could, I would bottle the Arizona sunshine and send you a big case. We have plenty to share!
    Happy weekend!

  5. Great take on the theme. I’d heard of light therapy but never seen what a box looks like. What a great invention!

  6. Thanks for educating us, Cindy!
I am so used to having sunshine the majority of the time (even in winter). I am not sure I could survive your winters.

  7. Oh – don’t say the days are getting shorter. I dread the short days come winter. But my hubby did just mention that it is now dark at 9pm here in Seattle. 🙁 I’m going to have to keep one of these in mind to help the gloom.

  8. I have never seen one of the light boxes before either. For some reason, I imagined that it was much smaller. I really could have used one when I lived in Washington State for 2 years. I really missed the sun. It must be tough in the winter in Alaska. Glad you have a light box to help.
